THE IMPORTANCE OF COSMETIC PATCH TESTING
Share
To find the right products for our skin, we mix and match cleansers, oils, butters, creams, and even soap to attain skin that helps us move through life comfortably and confidently. In doing so, we may come across products that do not best interact with our skin chemistry, which can lead to dry, flaky skin, breakouts, irritations, or, more severe cases, allergic reactions. Even the most natural and synthetic chemical-free products can cause an allergic reaction, so performing a cosmetic patch test is essential.
A cosmetic patch test is similar to a dermatological patch test in investigating allergens. To perform a cosmetic patch test, apply a small amount of product to a discrete area of the skin, like behind your ear or elbow. Next, leave the product on for 24 hours, checking regularly for itchiness, redness, swelling, or a rash. If there is no adverse reaction, you can retry the test on a larger portion of the skin. Once done, you can use the product freely on your skin.
When should you perform a patch test? A cosmetic patch test should be performed if you have or have had eczema, hives, or a rash.
